| General |
This section is intended to be read only once.
Hereafter you should be able to go about visiting the pages that you
really want to see. So read me and get on to the real information.
One word of warning. This site is NOT
designed to be covered in a single visit. Hopefully, there's too
many pictures to view, too many notes to read, and too much information to
absorb in a single sitting. Please be prepared to revisit to see
what you missed (via my bad planning or layout - or just plain information
overload).

| Why a web
site? |
The initial reason for setting up this site was simple
economics. I had access to eight photo albums and about one thousand
negatives for which I wanted to identify the time, the place, and the
people so I could build a photo based family history. Snail mail
back and forth to friends and relatives to help find out who's who just
wasn't a viable option. Putting scans on the Net seemed a good
alternative. Fun too. I can show off my scans from my youth in the
"Hub of the North Shore" - whatever that meant! A Web site
also gives me an opportunity to mouth off. Another big plus (for me
anyway).
My Dad, JCS, was an avid amateur photographer during the '30s and '40s
and I just found two boxes of his slides and negatives - most of which are
of family and work (CNR), many are interesting shots that caught my
eye. This is an opportunity to show off his work, my clan, and the
scenery of NB along with Bonaventure Co in la belle province... as well as
a number of pretty ladies of the time. Full of 'humbility', I will
throw in some of my own 'stuff'.
Note added 15 Nov 2002. If you are interested in the genealogy
side of the site, go directly to FH and ignore the stuff about me.
If names, dates and places, births, marriages, and deaths are your
interest, off you go to Reports. The JCS
material might be of historical interest, especially regarding the CNR
and/or Campbellton in the mid '30s. For the rest of you, wander at will,
wherever your curiosity takes you. Good hunting.
Today's plan is to change the scans every quarter or so; and maybe keep
interest up by throwing in all manner of bits and pieces as spice in the
Mulligan stew that this site will be. Please drop in every so often
and see What's New.
Here's a note added on 30 Apr 02. It looks like I will just
keep adding to the site until I reach my limit for storage space - 50
Meg. [Anyone mind an unsolicited cheer for my Canadian provider of
space? {50 meg for a paltry $6/month}]. If in need try, www.ClickHOST.net]
Heh, heh! I get a cut every time one of you sign up...but it's more than
worth it!
More note on 29 Sep 02. "The best laid plans..." Had
to delay access to the albums (beyond the two I have on here
already). Maybe next summer. Meanwhile, I'll add a few new
'finds' and beg for comments so I can improve the site.

| Administrivia |
A new word? Nope. A military term for the
necessary bits and pieces of routine administration that seem to be
required for our continued survival. My admin includes the goodies
on the menu in the left column. Use it and prosper as the Vulcans
never said.
The bolded sections of the menu are main groups and usually provide an
overview or introduction to the 'children' sections. Every section
of the menu on the left has something in it.

| Family
History |
My original focus. Now, it has become a project for
the present and the future. I had planned to put up both a text
based family tree (a Family Tree Maker Report) and pictures of family
members, both known and unknown. Lotsa luck. First, I have to
sort out two Sutherland families. (The price you pay when people
with the same family name marry.) Then there's a raft of O'Connells
who kept changing to Connell or Connel or Conell or ... Aargh! Last,
but not least, is a gaggle of Delaneys who may be Scottish, or Irish, or
something else - but appear on the Gaspé Peninsula as if by magic!
I won't even mention the Gillis's and Mann's (Manchulenko).
After that there's the minor task of putting dates, places and names to
pictures of folk I've never seen before.
My relatives will be begged to look at the crop of scans and tell me
who's who! In fact, anyone who can identify the where, when or who
of the scans that are currently a mystery would get a valueless prize, my
thanks. Please feel free to contact me
with any information, comments or questions - that is the whole purpose of
the site!!
There are "Descendent Reports" in the Family
History - Reports section for lovers of genealogy. More to
follow until I capture them all!

| Scans of
Photographs |
With some exceptions, I have reduced scans to JPEGs from the
much larger PSP (Paint Shop Pro) files and have then reduced them again
for display on the Net. Also used thumbnails wherever practicable.
This makes for a truly 'lossy' look and I recognize that it does not do
justice to some scans. If you want to get a more detailed scan
(usually 5" x 3" and 300 dpi resolution) let me know and I will
E-mail or snail mail one to you. Each scan has an identifying title,
use it to make rude comments or to ask for copies, please. [But see
copyright discussion below.]
Be warned that the scans I have saved as the 'originals' are big.
B&W scans are 1 to 3 Meg on average and Colour scans can be up to 30
Meg... obviously too big to normal E-mail.
To view a "full sized" (5" x 7" or 4" x
6") picture (if there is one), click on the
"thumbnail". To get back, right click with your mouse and
then choose 'back' and you should find yourself where you was - or so.

| Copyright |
I'm no lawyer so let me try to say what the © means to me.
Firstly, I can't imagine anyone wanting to use my textual
material. Works by others that end up here are covered by their own
copyrights. I claim all rights to photographs, scans, poetry or
prose by JCS and, of course, mine own.
Secondly, the scans/photographs - please ask before using.
Non-commercial use will probably by OKed sans snit. Mention the
source and make me feel good. Some of the photos may not be mine or
JCS's but unless a contrary claim is made, they are ours. Some of
the UNB scans are suspect. I can't remember taking them. But
there's a lot of my UNB time that is vague and perhaps alcohol erasure is
the cause!
The poetry included here is from JCS and was copied from a hand written
appointment calendar from the 1939-1945 time frame. Some poems may
be transcriptions from his favorite authors at the time and hence not
originals. In forty years of looking, none of the poems have been
attributed to other authors. I would appreciate any information
regarding the poems.
The gargoyle is a scan of a gift clock from evil spawn Tracy.
Credit is due to the Designer, Noel Mercieca for Mystic Gargoyles of
Cherison. The alien TORG, the snail, and the flags are from
Corel's Clip Art Collection (Draw 9). The GNU was picked up
from (not surprisingly) a GNU site - I know not whence...no copyright
here! The texture used is from the site www.grsites.com
which offers over 4000 textures, borders, etc.
The "Photo Album image" was stolen with no apology from my
daughter Heather (affectionately called Evil Spawn the Elder) and
she refuses to relinquish her rights. So be it. I won't get
mad, I'll get even.

| My
Philosophy |
It is not my intention to embarrass or offend anyone.
(Hysterical laughter heard offstage.) The worst I expect from you who are
unlucky enough to be captured here in some ridiculous position is a blush
or a rueful chuckle followed by a shake of the head. If
anything on this site does more than that or if it really offends your
delicate sensibilities, please let me know ASAP and I will either fix the
problem or at least discuss it with you. Honest! Really, have
I ever lied to you before? OK, except for that one little minor
incident involving the 45 gallon drum of Mazola oil, the 2,364 pong-pong
balls, and the three nuns. [that you mistook for overwrought penguins.]
|
| Epilogue |
It would be gross negligence to blame anyone else for
what is and will be here but I must at least give credit to Mike Koerner,
the world's biggest PITA since the 3' flame, who has bugged me daily as to
when this site would be up and running ...so he really deserves some of
the b... Oh Hell, I said I wouldn't ... |
